Hey everyone! It's been years since I've been on this blog I actually forgot the password. Much has changed in the time since we all got together in Weirton. Most notably for Weir High, the construction project that is currently underway for the new stadium/sports complex. I noticed the new goalposts had been erected the other day when dropping off my daughter for basketball practice. A new elementary school will also be constructed to combine and replace all the current elementary schools that most of us went to in town. The Cove School sight is being brought back to life as a small amphitheatre currently under construction. Development continues at the former Weirton Steel General Office grounds to compliment the Wal-Mart that opened there a couple years ago. That area will continue to grow in restaurant, retail, hospitality and light industrial fields as time goes on. Weirton continues to rise up from the despair of heavy job losses that occurred during the last downturn in the steel industry and is on the cusp of great things related to the Marcellus and Utica Gas Shale boom that is beginning to take shape. Weirton is dead center between both shale plays and could play a pivotal role in the industry as it moves forward.
On a lighter note, Weirton was heavily featured in a J.J Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration called Super 8. Paramount had the run of the town while they were here and man what a fun summer it was. Tanks rolling through neighborhoods, explosions, gunfire, move lights that made the night sky appear to be the middle of the day, sighting of "stars" real and imagined. I'm sure all of us that are still in town has at least one if not many stories of their experiences during the filming. Some of us were in it, many of us watched the filming as it moved through town each night. It was a pretty good movie and painted Weirton (referred to as Lillian Ohio in the movie) in a positive light unlike some of the crap they filmed when we were all in grade school/junior high like RECKLESS if you remember haha.. We made a positive impression on Paramount with our hospitality and they continually expressed their gratitude for all the help and patience the citizens provided them during their stay.
That's it, a brief summary of what's been going on in town up to this point. I look forward to hearing what's going on with everyone, their families and where they are in life. I will put the reunion info up as soon as I get the confirmed information. Until then, feel free to comment on this blog and check out the links to the local news media, school websites and old posts and pics. Check back frequently over the months leading up to the reunion for current updates and contact information...
